What is Dr. Mani’s Magic? A story of soil, science, family, and the quiet innovations that grew from necessity.

People often ask me a simple question:

“What is Dr. Mani’s Magic?”

Some people even imagine that I must be a magician. I do not mind the thought of wearing a magician’s hat—especially now that my hair has graciously receded enough to make room for one.

But the truth is much simpler.

I am not a magician.

The story of Dr. Mani’s Magic is really a story of curiosity, necessity, and many years of learning how nature works.

Where the Journey Began

The journey began more than three decades ago.

In the early 1990s, I had the opportunity to help establish the now-mandated Clean Citrus Program for the State of Texas. One of the major challenges at that time was developing reliable methods to propagate healthy citrus trees free of disease.

During that work, I began experimenting with extremely small citrus plants for propagation. Out of those efforts came the development of a technique known as micro-budding, in which a tiny bud is grafted onto a very young, decapitated rootstock plant.

While working with this system, we noticed something remarkable.

When the bud was placed near the apex of the young rootstock plant, the natural hormonal balance of the plant shifted. The young trees responded with vigorous growth and began producing fruit much earlier than trees propagated through traditional systems.

These trees later became known as Dr. Mani’s micro-budded citrus trees.

At the time, we never thought of it as magic. We simply accepted it graciously as a blessing revealed through careful observation of nature. Three decades ago, the growers were not impressed by a small plant!

Only many years later—after the name Dr. Mani’s Magic began to be used commercially—did we look back and realize that the first “magic” had already happened with micro-budded citrus.

During those early years, we also learned another important lesson.

The growing medium matters deeply.

Peat moss was not just a filler in the pot. Under certain conditions, young plants could struggle with soil-borne problems such as Rhizoctonia, which can damage tender roots and stems during early propagation – this was a painful and stressful revelation three decades ago!

But under the right conditions, the root environment became a powerful growth factor. The balance of moisture, structure, and microbial life around the roots could determine whether a young plant merely survived—or truly thrived.

That early realization shaped a belief that has guided our work ever since:

Plant health begins below the surface, in the biological and physical environment of the root zone.

Innovation Through Necessity

Years later, while operating a citrus nursery in Edinburg, Texas, we encountered many practical challenges. Young citrus plants require precise conditions of soil, plant nutrition, and pest management.

Unfortunately, many commercially available soil mixes and plant growth products did not perform well under our nursery conditions.

Even materials sold as compost were sometimes disappointing. They looked like compost, but they lacked the structure, stability, and biological activity that healthy plants require.

That was an important lesson.

Not everything sold in the market as compost or growing media truly supports plant health.

Because of this, we often had to discard commercially available options and begin developing our own systems.

One of the most interesting discoveries actually happened much closer to home.

After the severe winter freeze of 2021 damaged our lawn, my wife Anne—the Iron Lady of our home— noticed something unusual.

The grass in our front yard was responding very differently to the soil treatments we had been experimenting with the plant health booster product. A Ficus tree loaded with mealy bugs, aphids, and Cladosporium black fungus “cleared” with one application of our Pest Protect Pro – a mixture of diatomaceous earth and sulfur.

Anne was the first to point it out.

That simple observation led to many small trials and experiments. We began testing combinations of natural ingredients, soil amendments, and biological inputs.

What began as an observation in our own yard gradually evolved into more systematic trials in yards, our nursery, and orchards.

Only after many seasons of experimentation and years did some of those formulations evolve into products we felt confident using more widely.

Those solutions were never created as commercial products at first.

They were developed simply because we had real problems that required practical solutions.

The Next Generation

In 2020, our family business faced one of the most difficult moments in its history. A severe hurricane caused devastating damage to our citrus operations, resulting in losses reaching into the multi-millions in a single day.

During that difficult period, my son, Ron Skaria, MD, MBA, stepped forward to help stabilize and guide the  US Citrus Company’s recovery.

Ron is a double board-certified physician in Pediatrics and Sports Medicine, yet he chose to step in during that crisis and help move the agricultural operation forward.

As he became involved in our citrus nursery work, he helped develop several new formulations for plant nutrition and soil health. One of those innovations is the Crab–Kelp–Amino Acid (CKAA) series, including the 7-4-4 formulation.

The credit for that development truly belongs to him.

Around that time, my children began referring to these innovations collectively as “Dr. Mani’s Magic.”

I accepted the name gracefully.

But the truth remains: the magic is not in one person.

The Four Pillars of Dr. Mani’s Magic

Over time, our work naturally organized itself around four areas of focus. These became what we now call the Four Pillars of Dr. Mani’s Magic.

1. Propagation Innovation
Micro-budded citrus trees enable young plants to establish quickly and begin producing fruit earlier than traditional systems.

2. Living Soil Systems
Healthy plants begin with healthy soil. Our work emphasizes supporting the biological life of the soil, encouraging the growth and establishment of beneficial microorganisms that sustain plant growth. The soil is not dirt; it is a living womb!

3. Plant Nutrition
Years of nursery experience with failures led to balanced formulations designed to support both plants and soil biology. The Crab–Kelp–Amino Acid (CKAA) series is one example.

4. Plant Protection
Through extensive experimentation, we developed practical approaches using naturally occurring materials such as diatomaceous earth and elemental sulfur to help manage challenges like Asian citrus psyllid, which spreads citrus greening (HLB).

Together, these four pillars reflect a simple philosophy:

Grow strong plants by working with the natural systems that support them.

The Foundation of the Family

Behind all of this work stands someone who deserves enormous credit.

My wife Anne, whom I often call the Iron Lady of our home, has been the steady foundation of our family throughout this journey.

While the rest of us were experimenting with citrus trees, soil systems, and new ideas, Anne was raising our two children to become thoughtful and responsible citizens.

She kept our family healthy, grounded, and moving forward through both the good seasons and the difficult ones.

Every long journey needs someone who keeps the compass steady.

For our family, that person has always been Anne.

Looking Forward

Today the name Dr. Mani’s Magic represents more than a collection of products.

It represents a philosophy shaped by decades of working with plants, soil, and nature.

Dr. Mani’s Magic is not about secret ingredients.

It is about carefully bringing together natural elements that work in harmony with soil and plant biology.

Because healthy plants begin with healthy soil, and healthy soil begins with a thriving community of living organisms.

In the end, the real magic is simply this:

Understanding how nature works — and choosing to work with it, not against it.
