12 Seeds for New Graduates

by Mani Skaria, Ph.D.

The following is a presentation I gave to the graduating class of a local high school:

Video Script: Twelve Seeds for a Flourishing Future: Cultivating Dreams and Wisdom

“Hello, everyone! Today is a super special day. We are here to celebrate the achievements of our amazing graduates from Edinburg, Texas. These young minds have put in so much hard work, and they are ready to take on the world!”

“Today, we will plant twelve seeds to help these graduates grow into strong and successful individuals. These twelve seeds are like tools in a gardener’s shed, each ready to help cultivate their dreams, wisdom, and courage for the future.”

1. Pursue Lifelong Learning

“Seed number one is: Pursue Lifelong Learning! Learning doesn’t stop when you leave school. It’s like a treasure hunt where every new book, class, or experience helps you grow. Whether it’s reading fiction under a big tree, taking a cooking class, or learning how to play an instrument, embrace every chance to learn.”

2. Embrace Failure

“Seed number two is: Embrace Failure! Imagine trying to ride a bike for the first time and falling down. It hurts, but it also teaches you how to balance. Failure isn’t the end; it’s a teacher.

I want to share a story from my own life. I run an agribusiness in South Texas, growing citrus trees and producing fruit. Over the past five years, Mother Nature has thrown some serious challenges my way—either a hurricane or a freeze that caused huge losses to my crops. It was heartbreaking, but here’s what I learned: every disaster creates an opportunity for growth. When one crop fails, it teaches you to adapt, plan better, and find new ways to succeed. Embracing failure has allowed me and my business to steer through difficulties and emerge even stronger!”

3. Stay Curious

“Seed number three is to Stay Curious! The world is full of magical mysteries just waiting to be discovered. Ask questions like a little kid, dive into new hobbies, and explore the unknown. For example, consider picking up golf! It’s not just about hitting a ball; it’s an exciting challenge that requires skill, patience, and practice. Exploring new hobbies can unlock new passions and fresh perspectives in life!”

4. Cultivate Resilience

Seed number four is: Cultivate Resilience! Life can get tricky, like climbing a steep hill. When times get tough, it’s okay to feel down. But remember, just like a rubber band, you can stretch and bounce back! Lean on your friends, find solutions together, and remember to take care of your heart and mind.”

5. Build Relationships

Seed number five is to Build Relationships! Life is much better when friends and mentors cheer you on. These connections bring wisdom and joy. Go out, meet people, and share your dreams. Together, you can achieve great things!”

6. Be True to Yourself

Seed number six is: Be True to Yourself! Take time to discover your values and what makes you happy. When you follow your own path and listen to your heart, you find a deeper sense of joy and fulfillment. Remember, being yourself is your greatest strength!”

7. Give Back

Seed number seven is to Give Back! Helping others creates ripples of kindness and can change the world around you. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring, or simply being a good friend, your actions can make a big difference. Sharing your time and talents enriches both your life and the lives of others!”

8. Manage Finances Wisely

Seed number eight is: Manage Finances Wisely! Learning about money is important for a bright future. Just like planting seeds in a garden, good financial habits, like budgeting and saving, help you grow your resources. Dive into classes on money management, and watch how your financial garden flourishes!”

9. Stay Health-Conscious

“Seed number nine is to Stay Health-Conscious! Our bodies are like the gardens of our lives. By eating balanced meals, exercising, and taking care of our mental health, we create a strong foundation for our future. Just like watering a plant helps it flourish, taking care of yourself helps you reach your goals!”

10. Follow Your Dreams

“Seed number ten is: Follow Your Dreams! Dream big and set exciting goals for yourself! When you chase after what you love, work becomes play. Don’t be afraid to take chances and make mistakes along the way. Your dreams are worth the effort!”

11. Be Open to Change

“Seed number eleven is: Be Open to Change! Change is a natural part of life, like the seasons. Embrace it instead of fearing it! Be adaptable, and you might find new paths and opportunities that you never imagined were possible!”

12. Know the 5Cs to Build a Successful Business

Lastly, seed number twelve is: Know the 5Cs for Business Success! Understanding Cash Flow, Credit, Collateral, Commitment, and Character are key steps for anyone dreaming of starting a business. With a solid foundation in these areas, you can turn your ideas into reality. Remember, good decisions come from a blend of knowledge and common sense!”

Let’s transition all these into an acronym: C.R.E.A.T.E.D. S.C.C. displayed cheerfully.

As you embark on this exciting journey into the future, I invite you to draw inspiration from the wisdom of leaders who have shaped history. I encourage you to listen to a couple of poignant video documentaries featuring speeches by India’s Field Marshal, General Sam Manekshaw, during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure. His insights and guidance reflect exceptional leadership and offer timeless lessons that can inspire you as you navigate your paths ahead.

“Congratulations to every graduate! May these seeds inspire you as you journey into your bright future. Remember, you are capable of amazing things. Go out there and flourish!”

Best wishes to each of you on your new adventures. May you pursue your dreams with passion and determination!
